If you wish to create a video montage without spending large amounts of money on a professional video editor, then OpenShot may be worth trying out. It provides you with all the basic features you would expect from a video editor, as well as some advanced ones. The software's controls are easy to master, so you don't have to spend any time trying to learn how they work or looking over tutorials.

OpenShot was originally created for Linux, as a free and open source video editing solution. You can also find it for Windows and Mac and you can install it in under a minute, without making any complex settings. The software's hardware requirements are modest and you don't have to install any prerequisite tools.

The user interface is laid out like that of other video editors. Imported files are displayed in the upper left part of the window and you can preview the files or your montage with an embedded player, located on the right side. Of course, you can also find a timeline editor in the lower region of the interface, where you can drag and drop videos, audio tracks and other elements you need for your montage.

Besides your imported project files, the software displays a series of predefined transitions and special effects, in the same area, but on separate tabs. Transitions can be clicked and dragged, like all other elements, between two video segments and you can also resize them, to increase or decrease their duration. Additionally, you can drag and drop special effects over a video segment and make a series of fine adjustments on those effects.

OpenShot provides you with a good number of output options. You can choose to export your montages in DVD or Blu-ray format and you can also choose between various output profiles, to optimize your productions for the web or for specific devices.

Creating video montages can be much faster and easier with OpenShot.

Pros

The software has a clean and efficient design and easy to master controls. It provides support for numerous media formats and it places various output options at your disposal. Also, OpenShot is available for multiple platforms and it is absolutely free.

Cons

The software may be a bit unstable on Windows 7.
